According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the victim was immediately transported to nearby University Hospital with gunshot wounds. Tragically, doctors could not save the victim; he was pronounced dead approximately two hours after the shooting.

Newark police and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force are working together to investigate the fatal shooting.

Newark investigators have not yet identified a suspect or a possible motive for the killing.

As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is classified as a first degree felony that carries the most severe penalties in the NJ Criminal Code. A conviction on first degree murder charges could result in life imprisonment in state prison, with a mandatory minimum term of incarceration of 30 years.

The recent shooting marks the 69th homicide to occur in Newark in 2015.

Newark NJ Shooting ChargesNewark NJ police are looking into a shooting that left four individuals with unspecified injuries.

The shooting occurred around 9:00 p.m. The Newark Police Department got a call about gunshots being fired near the 30 block of Irvine Turner Boulevard in Newark, New Jersey.

When Newark NJ police officers showed up at the scene, they investigated and quickly located ballistic evidence of gunshots having been fired.

Newark police did not find any of the injured victims at the scene of the shooting. However, police officers later learned that the victims were transported via private cars to nearby University Hospital, where they received medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

Law enforcement is actively investigating the shooting incident. Police have not yet identified the culprit or confirmed a motive for the shooting.

If police do eventually figure out the identity of the shooter, they could face serious criminal charges for aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4, anyone in possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose can be charged with a second degree crime and sentenced to 10 years in New Jersey State Prison.

Newark NJ Illegal Handgun Possession AttorneysPolice in Newark New Jersey recently arrested two men who were allegedly in possession of weapons while sitting a parked car.

Members of the Newark Police Firearms Interdiction Team were on patrol in Newark’s West Ward around midnight when they observed a group of people standing near a parked Mustang convertible. The motor vehicle was located at the intersection of South 17th Street and South Orange Avenue in Newark, NJ.

The police officers walked toward the car and reportedly observed two people get inside the vehicle and start to move.

Once the officers got close to the vehicle, they peered inside and allegedly saw an open beer container visible in the car’s center console.

Additionally, police reportedly saw one person trying to hide an item in the backseat by kicking it.

Newark police ordered two people to step out of the vehicle. As the suspects exited the car, police reportedly saw a loaded .40-caliber handgun on the vehicle floor, near the feet of one of the suspects.

The two suspects are siblings: an 18-year-old man and 17-year-old brother. Both suspects were arrested at the scene and charged with multiple gun crimes, including unlawful possession of a weapon.

If the suspects are ultimately convicted of the most serious charges of illegal possession of a handgun, they would be subject to significant penalties. N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5(b), unlawful possession of a weapon such as a handgun may be classified as a second degree crime and is punishable by a sentence of 5-10 years in NJ State Prison.

Newark New Jersey DWI AttorneysTravis Tormey recently defended a client who allegedly drove while under the influence of drugs (DUI) in Clifton, New Jersey. The client was also subject to criminal charges for allegedly being under the influence of drugs. A conviction for a DUI and a disorderly persons offense would lead to severe consequences: suspension of her driver’s license for one year and a sentence of up to six months in the Passaic County Jail. In addition, the client faced the indignity of having a criminal conviction on her permanent record.

A Clifton New Jersey patrol officer stopped the client’s car after witnessing the client make an illegal U-turn. The police officer suspected that the client might be drunk, so he administered field sobriety tests. When the client allegedly failed the field sobriety tests, she was arrested and charged with a DUI. Police later administered a breath test, with the client blowing .00 percent BAC on the Alcotest machine. However, Clifton NJ police still suspected that the client was under the influence of drugs, so they took a urine sample. Police made a big mistake, however, by failing to utilize a drug recognition expert (DRE) to examine the client.

The client’s lab results eventually came back and showed that she did not have marijuana or any other illegal drugs in her system; instead, she tested positive for cough syrup and allergy medication. Without a DRE evaluation to support the prosecution’s claims, Travis J. Tormey was able to successfully challenge the DUI charges and get them dismissed. Mr. Tormey also managed to get the criminal charges dismissed. This was a fantastic result for our client and a major success for the Tormey Law Firm.

Montclair NJ Aggravated Assault LawyersMontclair NJ police arrested a local man accused of firing a gun at another individual on a township street.

The Montclair Police Department got a call about gunshots being fired at the intersection of Claremont Avenue and Greenwood Avenue in Montclair, New Jersey. The incident occurred just a short time before 11:00 p.m.

Thankfully, nobody was hurt as a result of the shooting.

When police officers showed up at the scene of the reported shooting, they began an investigation and canvassed the area for the culprit. Police eventually located the 25-year-old suspect and placed him under arrest.

The suspect has been charged with a number of crimes, including aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Montclair police do not yet know what, if anything, prompted the shooting. However, police are operating under the assumption that the shooting was a “targeted attack.”

After being placed under arrest and charged, the suspect was transported to the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark, NJ. He was being held at the jail on a $50,000 bail amount.

Newark New Jersey Heroin ChargesA major drug raid resulted in the arrests of 26 people in Newark and across New Jersey.

According to Essex County prosecutors, authorities conducted a number of raids in North New Jersey and Central New Jersey. The raids targeted a heroin distribution ring reportedly operating out of a base near the intersection of Foster Street and Frelinghuysen Avenue in Newark, NJ.

The joint investigation involved the FBI, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, and NJ State Police.

At the conclusion of the long-term investigation into the Newark-based drug ring, police officers and task force members executed search warrants and arrest warrants in Essex County, Middlesex County, and throughout NJ.

Teams of police officers from New Jersey State Police SWAT teams and several local police departments executed the warrants at several locations.

Police officers who conducted the raids reportedly seized more than 200 bricks of heroin, two illegal firearms, and roughly $8,000 in cash. Officials believe that the heroin has an approximate street value of more than $100,000.

Investigators are still searching for three people who are wanted by police for their alleged involvement in the drug network.

The drug raids resulted in police arresting 26 people. They have been charged various drug crimes, including heroin possession, heroin distribution, and conspiracy to distribute heroin.

The individuals arrested hail from New Jersey and New York, including Newark, Kenilworth, Long Branch, Palisades Park, Perth Amboy, Piscataway, Union Beach, and Woodbridge.

Glen Ridge Lewdness LawyersGlen Ridge NJ police are looking for a man who allegedly exposed himself to a passenger on an NJ Transit bus.

The suspect was riding on the bus when he reportedly exposed himself to a female passenger. The incident allegedly happened shortly after 10:00 a.m. on September 12.

Afterwards, the victim dialed 911 and notified the Glen Ridge Police Department.

The victim later spoke with police officers and said that the suspect exposed himself to her as the bus drove along Bloomfield Avenue Glen Ridge, New Jersey.

According to law enforcement, the bus driver became aware of the incident and brought the bus to a stop. At that point, the suspect allegedly got off the bus and fled the scene on foot.

The victim was able to give police a description of the suspect. The victim told police that the suspect is a male in his 50s and with a medium build. The suspect reportedly had a goatee and wore a grey t-shirt.

If investigators can identify and apprehend the suspect, he would probably be subject to significant penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:14-4, anyone who exposes himself in a public place to a non-consenting individual can be charged with a disorderly persons offense. A conviction on lewdness charges could lead to a sentence of 6 months in the Essex County Jail.

Newark NJ Carjacking AttorneysA carjacking and auto theft in Newark NJ ended with one of the suspects being killed by Newark police.

According to authorities, six suspects committed a carjacking early in the morning in Newark, New Jersey. The suspects allegedly stole a silver Jaguar sedan as the victim drove through the Valisburg section of Newark, NJ.

Newark police officers reportedly observed the suspects driving the stolen vehicle. Police then pursued the suspects through the South Ward.

The deadly incident occurred near Hawthorne Middle School. The stolen car came to a stop and police immediately captured three of the suspects; however, a fourth suspect was struck and killed by a patrol car.

The other two suspects attempted to flee the scene on foot, but they were soon found at a residence on West Runyon Street. The Newark Police Department’s Emergency Response Team arrived and tried to negotiate a peaceful resolution to the subsequent standoff. After several hours, the suspects finally exited the house and surrendered to authorities.

Investigators believe that the suspects might have also committed a robbery and shooting sometime after the carjacking incident.

The Newark Police Department has yet to release specific information about the suspects.

Newark New Jersey Heroin Distribution SuspectsPolice arrested three suspects accused of possessing a large quantity of illegal drugs and a loaded handgun in Bloomfield, New Jersey.

According to law enforcement, local Bloomfield police got several complaints about drug transactions outside a Wendy’s fast food restaurant in Bloomfield, NJ. Multiple police agencies, including the Essex County Sheriff’s Office and the Bloomfield Police Department, then formed a task force to look into the alleged drug sales.

Members of the task force were dispatched to the area of Bloomfield Avenue and Grove Street, where they reportedly saw a 26-year-old man exit a 2015 Toyota Camry and enter the Wendy’s.

The suspect, who lives in Irvington NJ, sat down at a table near a window and reportedly took out a black plastic bag.

When police officers approached the suspect, he reportedly threw the bag to the ground. According to officials, roughly 600 glassine envelopes of heroin could be seen inside the plastic bag.

Police searched the suspect and reportedly found Xanax and Suboxone tablets on his person.

Police later conducted a search of the suspect’s vehicle, which was located in the Wendy’s parking lot. The police officers discovered two men sitting inside the car.

The suspects, who both live in Newark NJ, appeared to be trying to conceal items. A subsequent search of the suspects allegedly led police to find a loaded .25-caliber semi-automatic handgun, heroin, crack cocaine, Oxycodone, and various prescription pills.

Authorities said that the estimated street value of the seized drugs exceeds $10,000.

The three suspects were charged with several drug offenses, including distribution of heroin, cocaine possession, and prescription drug possession. Additionally, the suspect who allegedly possessed the handgun was charged with illegal possession of a weapon.

After being placed under arrest and charged, all three suspects were transported to the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark, New Jersey. The suspects were being held at the jail on bail amounts ranging from $150,000 to $250,000.

Newark New Jersey Sexual Assault ChargesTwo Newark New Jersey men were recently sentenced to time in state prison for sexually assaulting a young girl in Irvington, NJ.

According to Essex County NJ prosecutors, the sexual assault happened at an abandoned house located in Irvington, New Jersey.

The suspects, who are 23 and 27 years old, started communicating with the 12-year-old victim on Facebook in September 2013.

Police were eventually alerted and began an investigation into the suspects. Once authorities had enough evidence, the suspects were placed under arrest. The suspects were then charged with multiple sex offenses, including aggravated sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

The suspects later appeared in Essex County Superior Court and entered guilty pleas on the very serious charges.

Now the suspects have been sentenced to lengthy terms of incarceration. The 23-year-old suspect was sentenced to 10 years in New Jersey State Prison; the 27-year-old suspect was sentenced to 7 years in New Jersey State Prison. The suspects will need to serve at least 85 percent of their sentences before becoming eligible for release on parole.

Furthermore, the suspects will have to register as sex offenders under Megan’s Law once they are released from prison.

Shortly after the sentences were handed down by the superior court judge, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office released a statement and said that the case demonstrates that NJ sex crime laws work “to protect children from the predatory behavior engaged in by these defendants.”
