Newark NJ police are looking for a suspect who allegedly shot and killed a local man.
The murder happened around 9:00 p.m. Authorities found the victim after getting a call about gunshots fired in the area of the 200 block of Jeliff Avenue in Newark, NJ.
The victim is a 21-year-old man who resided in Newark, New Jersey.
According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the victim was immediately transported to nearby University Hospital with gunshot wounds. Tragically, doctors could not save the victim; he was pronounced dead approximately two hours after the shooting.
Newark police and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force are working together to investigate the fatal shooting.
Newark investigators have not yet identified a suspect or a possible motive for the killing.
If police can eventually identify and locate the suspect, the culprit would face significant criminal penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is classified as a first degree felony that carries the most severe penalties in the NJ Criminal Code. A conviction on first degree murder charges could result in life imprisonment in state prison, with a mandatory minimum term of incarceration of 30 years.
The recent shooting marks the 69th homicide to occur in Newark in 2015.
