A Newark New Jersey man was placed under arrest after cops who were responding to an apartment fire allegedly discovered him sleeping next to a handgun and illegal narcotics.
The Newark Police Department sent officers and firefighters to an apartment building on 2nd Avenue in Newark NJ when someone reported smoke coming from an apartment. When Newark NJ police officers arrived at the scene and entered the apartment, they found the suspect sound asleep in a bedroom. The suspect was reportedly unaware that a fire was raging in his apartment.
While attempting to wake up the suspect, Newark NJ cops allegedly found a handgun, bullets, heroin, and cocaine. As a result, police arrested the suspect at the scene.
The 22-year-old Newark NJ man was subsequently charged with a number of crimes, including illegal possession of a handgun, possession with intent to distribute heroin, and possession with intent to distribute cocaine.
According to Newark officials, the handgun was reported stolen out of Florida earlier this year.
The good news is that no one sustained any injuries as a result of the Newark apartment fire.
