Authorities are investigating a shooting by an off-duty police officer in East Orange, NJ.
The violent incident occurred around 1:00 p.m., in the area of South Clinton Street and near a number of commercial properties on Central Avenue.
According to law enforcement, the Jersey City cop was off duty and walking along South Clinton Street when he shot, and killed, the victim. Investigators have not identified the victim, except to say that he was an “unidentified male.”
Essex County Prosecutor’s Office detectives are currently investigating the police shooting incident and attempting to determine whether criminal charges need to be filed. At this time, authorities are not releasing a lot of details about the shooting. Media reports indicate that witnesses told police that they heard six gunshots fired.
Since the shooting involved a police officer, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Professional Standards Bureau is investigating the matter.
