Newark New Jersey Assault ChargesPolice officers recently apprehended a man who allegedly assaulted an off-duty Port Authority police officer on a street in Newark, New Jersey.

The violent incident went down shortly after 3:00 a.m. on September 9 in the Ironbound section of Newark, NJ. According to authorities, an off-duty Port Authority cop was walking on the 500 block of Market Street when the suspect attempted to grab his gun. The two men struggled and the gun allegedly went off.

During the physical struggle, an off-duty EMS worker reportedly tried to help the officer and was savagely beaten by the suspect.

The EMS worker is a 27-year-old male who lives in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Both the EMS worker and the Port Authority officer needed medical treatment for injuries sustained during the attack.

Newark detectives conducted an investigation and reportedly recovered ballistic evidence at the scene of the shooting. Newark investigators later identified the suspect as the probable shooter.

Members of the Newark Police Fugitive Apprehension Team were able to locate and arrest the suspect at a residence on Roseville Avenue in Newark, New Jersey.

The suspect is a 31-year-old Newark man. He now faces criminal charges for aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

After being arrested and processed, the suspect was taken to the Essex County Jail in Newark, New Jersey. He was being held at the correctional facility on a bail amount of $250,000.
