Newark New Jersey police are searching for a suspect accused of shooting someone on a city street.
According to Newark NJ officials, the shooting went down on July 12. The victim is a 30-year-old man who lives in Newark, NJ. He was walking on the 300 block of North 7th Street in Newark when the suspect moved toward him. At some point, the victim saw that the suspect was carrying a firearm.
The suspect allegedly used the handgun to fire at least one gunshot, resulting in serious injuries to the victim. After firing the gun, the suspect ran off and fled the area on foot.
Newark police got a report of gunshots fired and sent police officers to the scene. When Newark NJ cops arrived at the scene, they saw the victim lying on the pavement and suffering from a gunshot wound.
The victim was rushed to Clara Maas Medical Center, where doctors provided him with medical treatment for his gunshot-related injuries. Doctors later listed the victim in stable condition. He was released from the hospital sometime later.
Newark law enforcement is actively investigating the violent incident. In fact, Newark NJ investigators have already to identify a suspect: a 21-year-old male who is said to be an acquaintance of the victim.
If police can eventually capture the suspect, he would likely face criminal charges for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and illegal handgun possession. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(b), a person who commits an assault with a weapon like a handgun or knife can be charged with a third degree felony. A conviction on third degree aggravated assault charges could lead to a sentence of 3-5 years in New Jersey State Prison.
