Newark NJ police are conducting an investigation into a non-fatal shooting during the late-night hours.
The shooting occurred on a Newark street around 1:00 a.m. According to authorities, the violent crime was committed in the area of Broadway and Oriental Street in Newark, New Jersey. The victim was walking along Broadway when the shooter drove by in a car and used a handgun to fire several gunshots at him. At least one bullet struck the victim, who subsequently fell to the pavement as the vehicle drove away.
A witness dialed 911 and notified the Newark Police Department. Newark cops were dispatched to the scene of the shooting, but the suspect was long gone by the time police arrived.
The victim, a 26-year-old Newark man, was briefly treated at the scene and then taken to a nearby hospital. Doctors at the medical facility treated the victim for his gunshot wounds and later listed him in stable condition.
Newark detectives are currently investigating the shooting and trying to identify the suspect. At this time, investigators have not determined the suspect’s identity or a possible motive for the non-fatal shooting.
If the suspect is eventually identified and captured, he would probably face serious criminal charges for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(b), aggravated assault with a handgun is considered a third degree crime and can result in a punishment of 3-5 years in New Jersey State Prison.
