Shooting at Newark NJ CookoutNewark New Jersey police are investigating a shooting that injured a local boy.

According to officials, the shooting happened at a cookout on the 800 block of South 17th Street in Newark, NJ. The boy suffered a gunshot wound in the head. Another man attending the cookout sustained a gunshot wound in the arm.

Both victims were transported via separate vehicles to University Hospital in Newark.

Despite the head injury, the boy survived and is now listed in stable condition. Thankfully, the boy was alert after getting medical treatment for his very serious injuries.

Investigators with the Newark Police Department said that they do not think the boy was targeted in the shooting.

Newark police are actively investigating the shooting. Police have yet to identify any suspects or make any arrests in the case.

If a suspect is eventually captured, they would be subject to significant penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(b), anyone causes bodily injury while using a deadly weapon can be charged with second degree aggravated assault. A conviction for second degree aggravated assault could lead to a sentence of 5-10 years in NJ State Prison.
