Newark law enforcement is investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash on the McCarter Highway.
The auto accident happened around 1:00 a.m. A pedestrian was trying to walk across the roadway when a motorist allegedly struck him. The driver then allegedly left the scene of the accident.
The victim was a 43-year-old man who lived in Newark, New Jersey. Emergency responders transported him to nearby University Hospital, but doctors could not save his life. The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital.
It is believed by authorities that the victim was on his way home from the Newark Waterfront Center when he was struck by the car.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force is actively investigating the fatal accident and attempting to determine the identity of the motorist. If the suspect is eventually identified and arrested, that person could be charged with vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident. Additionally, the suspect could be cited for several traffic violations.
