Newark New Jersey police arrested an Irvington NJ man accused of possessing an illegal handgun.
According to Newark law enforcement, the 43-year-old suspect was behind the wheel of a gold 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee and driving on Elizabeth Avenue, near Weequahic Park in Newark, NJ. Two Essex County Sheriff’s officers reportedly observed the suspect speeding in his car, so they pulled him over.
After initiating the traffic stop, the police officers approached the vehicle and asked the suspect to provide them with his driver’s license. At that point, the suspect reportedly gave the officers a fake ID.
The Newark police officers also reportedly saw a handgun in the vehicle glove box. The gun allegedly fell out of the glove box when the suspect tried to retrieve his proof of insurance and registration. According to authorities, the gun was a loaded .45-caliber Glock handgun.
The suspect, who lives in Irvington, was arrested. He has subsequently charged with several weapons offenses, including unlawful possession of a weapon and a certain persons offense for being a felon illegally in possession of a gun.
Additionally, the suspect was charged with providing false information to police and possession of a fraudulent driver’s license.
After being arrested and charged, the suspect was moved to the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark, New Jersey. He was being held at the jail on a $75K bond amount.
