Newark New Jersey police are looking into the murder of a local man, the third of three brothers who have been killed in recent years due to gun violence in Newark, NJ.
According to authorities, the 20-year-old victim was shot and killed as he walked along 11th Street in Newark NJ.
After being discovered by Newark police officers, the victim was taken to nearby University Hospital. Tragically, doctors were not able to save the victim; he was pronounced dead a short time after arriving at the hospital.
The victim’s two brothers were also murder victims in Newark, NJ during the past five years. One brother was just 21 years old when he was fatally shot in what Newark officials called “gang violence”; the other brother was also 21 years old when he was murdered while walking on Bedford Street.
The victim’s mother recently issued a strong condemnation of gun violence on Newark streets.
Meanwhile, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka attended a city council meeting and offered his condolences to the mother while calling her tragic losses “heartbreaking.”
Additionally, Baraka called on Newark officials to take strong measures to prevent further violence in the future. Baraka specifically asked local political leaders to form a public safety department, in addition to consolidating the city’s police and fire departments.
The fatal shooting of the third brother was the 104th homicide in Newark NJ in 2015.
If law enforcement is eventually able to identify and locate a suspect in the killing, it is probable that criminal charges for murder would follow. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is a first degree felony that carries a potential sentence of life imprisonment in New Jersey State Prison, with a minimum mandatory term of imprisonment of 30 years.
