Newark NJ police are looking for a suspect in a double homicide at a local apartment.
According to authorities, a man and a woman were both shot to death inside a residence on Clinton Police in Newark, New Jersey.
Newark police officers were sent to the scene after someone dialed 911 to report gunshots being fired in the area. When Newark officers arrived at the residence, they discovered the two shooting victims.
Emergency medical responders could not do anything to save the victims; they were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force are conducting a joint investigation into the homicides.
Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose issued a statement about the murders, referring to them as “senseless” and saying that “the availability of too many guns” was partly responsible for the homicides.
The two shooting deaths came on the heels of two other homicides in a period of 24 hours in Newark, NJ. So far this year, Newark has already seen 10 homicides.
If a suspect is eventually identified and captured for the recent double homicide, they would probably face serious criminal charges for first degree murder. A conviction for first degree murder could lead to a punishment of life imprisonment in New Jersey State Prison.
