Newark New Jersey police are attempting to solve the city’s first homicide of 2016.
According to law enforcement, a 36-year-old Irvington New Jersey man was murdered during a domestic dispute at an apartment on Spruce Street in Newark, NJ.
The Newark Police Department got word of about of a domestic altercation at a residence in the city’s Central Ward shortly after 2:00 a.m. When Newark NJ police officers showed up at the apartment, they found the victim lying on the ground and unconscious.
Not long after law enforcement arrived at the home, emergency medical responders pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
Although authorities have yet to specify the precise cause of the victim’s death or the nature of his injuries, they did say that he was probably killed as a result of a physical altercation. Medical examiners will soon perform an autopsy on the victim in order to determine the exact cause of death.
Police have not yet made any arrests in the case.
If Newark NJ investigators are eventually able to determine who killed the victim, it is likely that criminal charges for murder would follow. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is classified as a first degree felony and carries a potential punishment of life imprisonment in New Jersey State Prison.
The victim, who lived in Irvington, New Jersey, was the first homicide victim in Newark in 2016. During the previous year, 2015, there were a total of 105 homicides in Newark, NJ.
