Newark NJ police are looking into the possible murder of a man who was found dead inside a local residence.
The Newark Police Department got a report of a dead body in a home located on the 300 block of Elm Street in the Ironbound district of Newark, New Jersey.
When police officers showed up at the scene, they discovered the 64-year-old man’s body. The victim is said to be a Newark NJ resident. Authorities said that he sustained body trauma prior to dying. Medical examiners will perform an autopsy to determine the exact cause of the victim’s death.
Officials pronounced the suspect dead at the scene not long after police arrived.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force and the Newark Police Department and conducting an ongoing investigation into the homicide. Investigators have yet to identify a suspect in the killing.
If police can eventually classify this as a murder and they can identify a suspect, it is likely that serious criminal charges would follow. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is a first degree crime that carries a potential sentence of life imprisonment in New Jersey State Prison.
This was the second homicide in Newark NJ during a violent two-day period. A day earlier, Newark police found an East Orange man who had been fatally shot while sitting in a car parked in the city’s Central Ward.
