Bloomfield NJ police are searching for a woman accused of stealing $300 from a charity jar at a local business.
The theft occurred at the Hot Bagels Abroad & Deli located on Broad Street in Bloomfield, New Jersey. The woman reportedly walked into the deli shortly after 1 p.m. and placed an order at the counter.
While the woman waited for her order, she allegedly wrapped a jacket over a charity jar. She then walked out of the store and fled the scene on foot.
The charity jar was intended to help victims of RETT syndrome, a rare postnatal neurological disorder. According to officials, the jar contained roughly $300 in coins and bills.
Bloomfield detectives investigated the theft and obtained surveillance video footage from the deli.
Law enforcement believe that the same suspect also stole approximately $20 from a tip jar at the Dragon Chinese restaurant located on Vaux Hall Road in Union, New Jersey. Investigators were able to obtain surveillance video footage in that theft incident as well.
f the suspect is eventually identified and apprehended, she would face severe criminal penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:20-3, theft of movable property with a value of between $200 and $500 is a fourth degree felony. A conviction for fourth degree theft of movable property can lead to a sentence of up to 18 months in NJ State Prison.
